FAQs
Emergencies occur in congregations every week, whether during worship services, youth activities, or Wednesday night prayer meetings. The church staff and congregants will respond to various types of emergencies, including medical, fires, acts of violence, or weather-related incidents. Someone will call 911, administer first aid, retrieve a fire extinguisher, or take any other appropriate action. Without a safety team and plan in place, these responses will take place spontaneously. The purpose of safety team ministries is to reduce response time and increase the effectiveness of the overall response. For example, designated safety team members will promptly call 911 and respond to the specific emergency, review and update first aid kits, as well as inspect and maintain fire extinguishers. The Safety Team is entrusted with the responsibility of responding to and assisting during such situations.
After reading and studying reports from the FBI and other government agencies, it is evident that "prevention" is more effective than "response." In short, achieving a "hard target" status for the church while staying true to its purpose requires a delicate balance, but it is relatively easy to accomplish. CCNC offers suggestions that will assist your congregation in achieving both objectives. If the congregation intends to establish armed security, it is crucial to consider the associated costs, such as insurance, regular training, and an extensive hiring process.
